Who We Are

Save A Pet was founded by Gertrude Maxwell on August 28, 1972 in Highland Park, IL. It was reported to be the second No-Kill humane organization in the nation. While wintering in Florida in 1978, Gertrude founded Save Precious Lives, Inc. which was renamed Save A Pet Florida, Inc. in 1984. The directors & board members of Save A Pet Florida are continuing the humane work started by Gertrude over 40 years ago. We partner with several like-minded animal rescue organizations throughout South Florida. We provide financial assistance for emergency medical care for owned pets of needy people in Palm Beach County, FL. (application & qualification apply). We are active in reducing the homeless cat population through our hands-on trap, neuter, return (TNR) program. We provide cat food to caregivers of the feral cat colonies we have sterilized. We rescue kittens from the streets & domesticate them in foster homes. We save sick or injured dogs from euthanasia at high kill county pounds. The dogs are placed in foster homes for healing & eventual adoption. Further information about these programs can be found on our website at
