Note to Potential Adopters: Lassie and Cleo and Rin Tin Tin and Toto don't show up in rescue, okay? We don't get the elegantly coiffed, classically beautiful, completely trained, perfectly behaved dog. We get the leftovers. Dogs that other people have incompetently bred, inadequately socialized, ineffectively "trained," and badly treated. Most Rescue dogs have had it. They've been pushed from one lousy situation to another. Some never had proper veterinary care, kind and consistent training, or sufficient company. They've lived outside, in a crate, or in the basement. They're scared, depressed, and anxious. Some are angry. Some are sick. Some have given up. But we are Rescue and we don't give up. We never give up on a dog. We know that a dog is a living being, with a spirit and a heart and feelings. Our dogs are not commodities, things, or garbage. They are part of sacred creation and they deserve as much love and care and respect as the next Westminster champion. So please, please don't come to rescue in the hope of a getting a "bargain," or indeed of "getting" anything. Come to Rescue to give, to love, to save a life - and to mend your own spirit. For Rescue will reward you in ways you never thought possible. I can promise you this - a rescue dog will make you a better person. By Diane Morgan *

Who We Are

We are the Jacksonville Sheltie Rescue Inc. On this site I am going to show you lost or found and make people aware of the available rescued shelties in the Jacksonville, FL area. Generally people think Shelties NEVER get in dire straits. Let me tell you folks! We rescued over 40 of those wonderful dogs last year, just in our city. From the Shelters, from the streets, and from people who just didn't want to bothered with a dog anymore. Tis sad the state of affairs the canine world is in!

Adopting a friend

You will need to fill out an adoption application, and be prepared for a home visit. We have a contract, with a forever return policy and there is an adoption fee charged for our rescued shelties. They go to their new home spayed or neutered. They go to homes with fenced yards. They must be house dogs, and be considered members of your family. . . Shelties are truly little people in fur coats. More about the Sheltie: The Shetland Sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog with a delightful temperament. Gentle, sensitive, loyal and dainty. Very lively, intelligent and trainable. The Shetland Sheepdog is one to the smartest breeds, very willing to please and obey. These dogs are so smart that many fanciers consider them to have almost human intelligence. Loving, loyal and affectionate with its family, but suspicious with strangers, especially with children, but they will put up with a lot from children *in the family*. The Sheltie is known to not allow themselves to be touched by strangers and will display noisy persistent barking. It is a good guard and watchdog. Must socialize *extensively* as a puppy. This breed needs people and must be raised in a home where he can have a lot of companionship. They like to be kept busy. The herding instinct is still very strong in many of them. They love to chase things. Unfortunately - and often disastrously - they love to chase cars. A Sheltie should not be allowed to run free near a road as it may decide to chase a car or something else it sees across the road, running a high risk of getting hit by a car. Because of it's beauty and kindness, the Sheltie has become a popular companion dog. This breed may bark a lot. The Sheltie will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. This active, graceful dog needs lots of exercise, preferably running free; but be sure the dog is in a safe fenced area.
