Who We Are

The mission of the Nassau Humane Society shall be to dedicate ourselves to the humane treatment of all animals; to strive to alleviate their suffering and neglect, support the human-animal bond, and foster an environment in which people respect all living creatures. We will provide safe refuge and compassionate care for animals.

We will pursue workable solutions to the most urgent animal welfare needs of our community, which are animal overpopulation and homeless pets. Our solutions will emphasize the mutual benefit of bringing pets and people together.

We will provide rescue and control as a lifeline to animals in need and for the necessary protection of our community.

We will encourage and provide for pet adoption, animal-assisted therapy, pet care education, outreach spay and neuter program and other welfare efforts, all in support of our comprehensive community service obligation.

Our regular adoption hours are 11:30 A.M. till 6:00 P.M. Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 A.M. till 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, and 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, closed Monday. We will open for you, by request, if necessary to place a animal in a good home. We will have you complete our application and will attempt to approve the application on the spot. The adoption fees will cover the cost of the spay or neuter of the animal as well as the other medical work completed on the animal. While we believe that all of our pets up for adoption are healthy, because they come from the shelter environment, and for the most part arrived at the shelter as strays from animal control, we think it best that you have them seen by your vet for a physical. We require you to take your new pet to your vet. within a week after the adoption to get a wellness check up.

We will do whatever we can to help you find your new best friend. Our goal is to adopt out as many of our animals as quickly as possible so that their time spent in the shelter is kept at a minimal. Our volunteers and employees will do whatever is necessary to help match up adoptive parents to the pets under their care. Please help us reach our goal of finding homes for all of our "kids". Thank you !!
