About Us

Please visit our website ( http://www.k-9lifesavers.org ) and help us give these wonderful dogs a second chance at life by adopting or volunteering.

Adopting A Friend

The adoption process is almost always completed within one week from when you submit your adoption questionnaire - times can vary depending on your location, the dog’s location, and availability.

Once approved, you will need to finalize your adoption by completing an adoption contract and paying the adoption fee in cash or check.  At that time, available medical records will be provided along with a variety of other information.

Adoption Fees

  • Puppy (6 months and under) – $350.00
  • Young/Adult Dog (7 months to 8 yrs) – $300.00
  • Golden Year – $200.00
  • Heartworm positive Dog – $375.00

K-9 Lifesavers is often asked what is included in our adoption fees. Because we receive no government funding, we rely primarily on adoption fees to support our mission.

Some of our costs are obvious, such as food, leashes, collars, bowls, crates, bedding, and toys.  But the adoption fee also covers a number of other services.  If a foster is unavailable, K-9 Lifesavers pays boarding fees. We also must transport costs to bring the dog to the area.

We believe in spaying and neutering to help control the pet popultation. Therefore, all K-9 Lifesavers' adoption fees of all dogs over the age of 6 months include spay/neuter.  Adopters for dogs 6 months and younger are required to sign an agreement agreeing to spay/neuter their puppy. Our dogs receive a heartworm test, DHLPP, and rabies vaccinations. Puppies receive vaccinations appropriate to their age.  We also give flea/tick preventative and de-worm every dog that comes into our program. Some canines have also been treated for other medical issues such as heartworm or kennel cough. The adoption fee covers only a portion of our animal care expenses and is less than what you would pay for these veterinary services on your own.

We hope this information is useful in helping potential adopters understand some of the costs that are involved in supporting K-9 Lifesavers.

Who We Are

K-9 Lifesavers is an approved 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer organization that rescues homeless and abandoned dogs from high-kill shelters and other high-risk situations. K-9 Lifesavers works with dedicated volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, trainers, and kennels to provide loving temporary care while we find well-matched, carefully screened forever homes for each dog we take in.  We also serve as a support group to our adopters and all dog owners by providing ongoing education and resources for the well-being of their dogs, including the importance of proactive spay/neuter policies, positive behavior training, and good nutrition.

We rescue dogs and puppies that are scheduled for euthanasia from high kill shelters in Georgia, West Virginia, the Carolina’s, Tennessee, and Kentucky. We pay transporters to bring the dogs to the DC metro area. When they arrive, we do basic vetting and do our best to assess any emotional, physical or training needs they might have.

Come Visit Us

We do not have a Shelter Facility. Our dogs are cared for by loving foster homes and private boarding partners.

K-9 Lifesavers holds adoption events every weekend. Potential adopters can request specific dogs be brought to an event by filling out an adoption questionnaire and returning it to the adoption counselor listed in the dog's bio. If you are scheduled to attend an adoption event to meet a dog, please bring your completed adoption questionnaire with you.

Click here to find our weekly event schedule: http://k-9lifesavers.org/adoptable-dogs/adoption-events/

All adoption events are from 12 – 2pm

We are always looking for volunteers to assist at events, staffing the table and showing off the dogs to potential adopters.
