Who We Are

We are a group of volunteers who love dogs and are committed to find the best home for each dog that is rescued. All of our puppies and dogs live in foster homes and are socialized and well known to their foster families. If you think about this, this is a much better place to find your future best friend, rather than in a cage. When the foster family reads your application, they will have a sense if you fit in well with their foster dog's temperament, energy level, size, and ability to interact successfully with the members of your family. You cannot determine this during a ten minute visit at a shelter or pet shop. Almost all dogs and puppies are cute, but you wouldn't pick a spouse without thinking beyond an initial attraction, would you? Consider that this dog will be part of your family for more years than many marriages last, and make a rational choice! Please be aware that some of our dogs are with foster families outside the state. When this is the case, adoption fees cover transportation to your area.

Adopting a friend

If you are interested in exploring the possibility of adopting one of our dogs, please fill out an adoption application. This is the first step and is absolutely necessary to allow us to make a good match. If your application indicates a good match, you will have the opportunity to get in touch with the dog's foster parents to talk. Please remember that we are all volunteers doing this work in our spare time, so please be patient with us and remember we do sometimes take a few days to get back to you.

Our adoption fees run between $300 and $500, depending on the size and age of the dog, and the location of the dog. Adopting a senior dog is considered a true "mitzvah" or act of kindness that goes down in the book for eternity, so please consider it if you have it in your heart. We don't have many of them, but they often wait a long time before someone steps up to adopt them.

Our adoption fees pay for veterinary care for all our dogs, whether they are puppies needing their initial vaccinations, or dogs that have been hit by cars and need special surgery. Transportation, food, supplies and medications are all part of our costs. Ask any rescue organization: we do not make money at this! Any excess on one adoption always goes to subsidize the dog who needs extra care. If you cannot afford the adoption fee, then please be realistic and consider whether you can really afford to have a dog. They need regular veterinary care, food, medication, and supplies. This is not an inexpensive or short term commitment. We are looking for "forever homes" for our rescues. Remember, for every one we save, there are many others who are euthanized. We consider it our duty to find the best possible home for each dog, and the best possible dog for each qualified home.

THANK YOU for choosing to ADOPT, whether from Nutmeg or from another rescue or shelter! Our goal is to promote adoption of dogs in need, period. If we feel another rescue or shelter has a dog that is a better match for you, we will not hesitate to refer you! Before Applying to adopt please consider the following:

Instructions for applying to adopt appear in the biographical listings for each dog.

The speed at which your application is processed for adoption is dependent largely on how thoroughly and specifically you answer each question. Please do not leave any question blank. Please include a detailed explanation for any question where you are asked to elaborate an answer.

If you are married or currently living with a significant other, that personís information must be included where the application asks for Co-Applicant information. You must be at least 21 years of age to submit an adoption application (Applicant & Co-Applicant).

We are not first come, first served. Nutmeg focuses on finding good matches between dogs and families to ensure lifelong adoptions. Nutmeg reserves the right to refuse adoption to anyone without disclosing the reasons.
