History of FOBAS: CHANGES ARE COMMING!
FOBAS which is short for the Friends of the Bridgeport Animal Shelter is in dissolution. The dissolution of FOBAS is sad for us, but very simply, it's job is done and it's time to close the door on that era.
FOBAS left the Bridgeport Animal Shelter on April 15, 2005. Since then, we have upheld our obligation to the City of Bridgeport, the animals and people we served by maintaining this organization for an additional eight years. We continued to accept back pets we adopted, we assisted any adopter that requested our assistance and at this time, it is clear to all of us that our job and responsibility to the City of Bridgeport is done. Now, we may move forward with our own purpose and focus, free of being a "captured rescue" as we were previously. We are so excited no one has stopped smiling since the vote to dissolve FOBAS.
We have decided to revive the previously dissolved Animal Angels Rescue Foundation, Inc., known as AARF for short. The corporate structure for AARF is much different than FOBAS. AARF has broader authorized fund raising activities and an eye on changing the system from the top. We intend to advocate legislation which will directly impact the Connecticut sheltering system and model same after the New York model which includes animal control officers vaccinating pets and the sterilization of pets prior to adoption. Connecticut's ACPC program is outstanding, but we can do better.
Of course, there will be pets for adoption, we could never not work directly with animals, but with the changes at the Department of Agriculture level, foster homes actually expose themselves to a search without a warrant, we are opposed to the rule and believe it to be unconstitutional. We want pets protected, but foster homes should not have less rights and protections (as a private home) against unreasonable searches than a municipal animal shelter. The above are just examples on how AARF will move in a manner to positively influence the rescue community.
So, stay tuned! We are growing and moving forward!
