Freedom Service Dogs
Freedom Service Dogs (FSD) is a tax-exempt charity that rescues abandoned dogs from shelters and breed rescue groups along the Front Range from Colorado Springs, CO to Cheyenne, WY. We custom train the dogs, using positive training methods, to assist people with disabilities. FSD places dogs only in Colorado so that we can provide as much hands-on support as is needed to develop a successful client-dog team and avoid the expense and difficulty of out-of-state travel for our clients. We rely on individual and organization donations and foundation grants - we are not a government agency.
Freedom Service Dogs adoption fees are between $250.00 - $550.00 depending on the life long friend you are interested in adopting. We obtain nearly all of our dogs from local animal shelters and rescue groups. After we have adopted a service dog candidate, the dog must pass a number of temperament tests and a thorough veterinary evaluation. If the dog passes this initial testing, he or she receives vaccinations, is neutered, and begins training for work as a service dog. Some dogs are unable to complete their evaluation or their training due to aptitude, temperament, or medical factors, and become available for adoption as pets. Occasionally, a dog is available for adoption after they retire from service, when their previous partner needs a successor dog to assist them and is unable to care for two dogs. Foremost to Freedom Service Dogs is the welfare of the dog. We are very careful about the people whom we select. Because they have already lost the security of their original home, it is imperative that they be placed in a stable home where they will be allowed to live out the rest of their lives with loving care. We ask you to carefully evaluate your own lifestyle and situation before you decide to make the major commitment of adopting a dog. If you are selected to receive a FSD dog, we recommend that you attend an obedience class with your new pet. This will assist in bonding with your pet and will hone your skills so that you will be able to maintain the manners and skills of your new dog.
