Our Featured Pet...

PLEASE CHECK OUR EVENT CALENDAR TO SEE WHERE WE WILL BE AT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. Come see some of the adorable M.A.S.H. animals that are available for adoption. Also, meet Sheriff Joe's M.A.S.H. staff who care for the animals. While you're there, please inquire how you can become a volunteer M.P.C.A. posse member. By becoming a member, you will be able to help all of the animals currently housed at the M.A.S.H. Unit and help prevent further animal cruelty in Maricopa county.Click to see our events!

Great News! Everyone in Maricopa County knows the importance of each of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Posse...and he has many. Several years ago, Sheriff Joe created the A.C.E. Posse (Animal Cruelty Enforcement). The ACE Posse played a major part in helping to prevent animal cruelty. All of our pets listed have been seized by the Sheriff's Office as a result of abuse or abandonment. Their previous owners have been prosecuted and all animals have been released to the MASH Unit in hopes of finding new, loving homes. Sheriff Joe has now created a new posse, the M.P.C.A (Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Posse, designed to ensure a safe future for all of the pets who are or have been guests of Sheriff Joe at the MASH Unit as well as joining forces with what once was the A.C.E. Posse. The MPCA Posse is looking for some great volunteers. This new posse will focus on promoting adoptions for the animals still in his care and providing education and resources for the lucky animals that have found new, loving homes, aiding cruelty investigators, checking on pet shops and puppy mills. We are looking for animal lovers willing to do follow-up home checks on the animals that have been adopted, and other volunteers that can offer resources such as discounted obedience training classes, a free first vet visit, a free behavioral consultation, free samples of food or coupons, or provide educational information relating to adopting shelter animals. You do NOT have to become a posse member to donate to the MASH Unit. Please see below listed under "donations" for further details.

Who We Are

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's no-kill shelter, MASH, was created to house and care for animals that have been abused or neglected by their caretakers, and that have been rescued by the Animal Cruelty Investigative Unit. The purpose of the shelter is to provide for these tragic animals, who must necessarily await the outcome of their owners' cruelty cases in court. Hopefully, their ultimate outcome will be adoption into loving, permanent homes. The MASH Unit can also house the small pets of individuals who may have to temporarily reside in a local domestic violence shelter that do not accept pets. This is a no-cost service that can be provided for up to 60 days. The animals must have current shot records. Any medical costs expended while the pets are in MCSO care will be the responsibility of the owner. The first shelter opened by Sheriff Arpaio is in the First Avenue Jail, located at First Avenue and Madison Street, Phoenix, AZ. This 30-year-old jail previously held inmates, but was closed for repairs to plumbing in 1999. Though it is no longer suitable for housing inmates, the jail is like paradise to the four-footed victims now housed and recovering there. Detention officer staff and sentenced female inmates care for the animals. The shelter is air-conditioned and the cells have been reconditioned to comfortably house animals. Some critics have said that it's inhumane to put dogs and cats in air-conditioned quarters when inmates don't have air conditioning. A good answer came from one of the inmates assigned to care for the dogs. When asked if she was resentful about not having air conditioning, she gestured to some of the dogs and said, "They didn't do anything wrong. I did."
