If you prefer to fill out an application in another way, once you've completed it, you can either fax it to us at (205) 669-3819, e-mail it to our Adoptions Manager Mike Yates at, or bring it with you when you come to visit us during our adoption hours of Tuesday - Saturday 12:00 to 5:30.

We temperament test most of our dogs. Our adoption counselors are here to help match you with the best possible friend for you. Once your application is completed and you've visited with a counselor, you can pick your new pet! None of the animals at Shelby Humane may go home unless they are already spayed or neutered. Those who are can go home with you that very day!

The Shelby Humane Society was founded in 1982 and is a non-profit volunteer organization. While the Society's activities cover a broad spectrum of animal related topics, the Humane Society enjoys a reputation of professionalism as well as compassion.

Animal Rescue:  When an animal is injured, abused, mistreated, or abandoned, Shelby Humane Society county takes control of the situation. The animal is evaluated and an attempt is made to save and place him/her.

Education: In addition to offering guidance about spay and neuter procedures, the Shelby Humane Society sponsors educational programs that cover the full range of pet ownership issues. Our education department visits school classrooms on a regular basis.

Spay and Neuter:
Stray animals are not the only cause of animal overpopulation. Many pet owners refuse to have their animals spayed or neutered. We work in conjunction with most of our local Vets to educate the community about spaying and neutering, and to provide assistance with the financial and emotional needs owners may have. Just give us a call at the shelter and we will be glad to answer any questions you may have. Speaking of which, check out our...

Quick Fix Program!

If you are interested in having your pet spayed/neutered contact us! Our employess will pick your pet up at different locations around the Shelby County area, take them to a specially-designed spay/neuter clinic, then bring them back to you the same day! The surgery can be performed for as low as $18. You can even donate to help someone else's pet be spayed or neutered. Even if your pets are spayed and neutered, your tax dollars are being used to pay to pick up, house, and feed your neighbors unwanted litters of puppies and kittens. Cremation Service: When our faithful friends become a precious memory, the first thing we must contend with is how to dispose of the remains. If you feel that burial would not be an appropriate choice, or if not feasible, cremation has become an increasingly popular choice. Using modern technology which is friendly to the environment as well as dignified for your pet, cremation offers a practical and fitting solution to both disposal and maintaining the memory of your pet. We have a wide selection of Urns for your loving pet.

Placement Service: When animals need homes or when a home needs an animal, the Shelby Humane Society can help. The Society works hard to match the right pet with owners. Our shelter is located at 381 McDow Road in Columbiana, across from the Sheriff's Department You can contact the shelter at 205-669-3916 We also have animals at Pets mart on Hwy 280 every Saturday. Cats are available at both Petsmart locations seven days a week, as well as at the new PetCo in Hoover. Mobile adoptions are often held at various locations each month. Check the Events section of our website!.

Volunteers: Volunteerism is a driving force in our country. If it weren't for the volunteers in our organization, so many things would not be done. Our Board of Directors is an all volunteer board. The people who work at our off-site adoption centers are all volunteers. So many of our special events are coordinated and run by our volunteers. What a wonderful way to make yourself feel better and help the animals at the same time. There are opportunities that await you. Call the shelter at (205) 669-3916 x22 to sign up to volunteer today!
